Ian Chappell’s foreword to Eric Freeman’s biography: ‘Man for All Seasons’ is a gem, talking of Eric’s amazing all-round skill and desire both as a football and a cricketer. A favourite story concerned a Shield game against NSW in 1970-71. Freeman took five wickets in the first innings only to injure a hammy. He told Chappell he could bowl only a few overs with the new ball off a short run in the second dig… but only if he really needed him…. Chappell did and having got the first breakthrough, NSW was coasting at 1-86 when Chappell asked him again if he could bowl? ‘Yes’ said Freeman. He finished with 8-64 and every over got faster and faster according to his grateful skipper. ‘By his last couple of overs Eric was operating at full pace (despite his hammy)… it was an amazing triumph of skill, strength and optimism and a wonderful advertisement for the boosting qualities of adrenaline.’
